GapBuster Learning Center

December 2008

Dear Supporters and Friends,

At this time of year, we often begin to feel the stress of the gap between completing year-end tasks and the little time left to do them. For example, have you waited until the last minute to make some of your 2008 charitable contributions? I am writing to thank you for your past support and to ask you to remember GapBuster Learning Center (GBLC) as you make your final 2008 contributions.

GBLC supports students through various programs, activities, and teen development experiences. We offer after school enrichment activities and the Leaders-in-Training and Cross-Tutorial Mentoring programs. Building Scholars for the Future, summer program provides support and enrichment to students, and we offer preparation for the SAT, Maryland School Assessments and the High School Assessments. We also provide Title I Supplemental Educational Services.

Over the past nine years, GBLC has served over 1,200 youth. As our tenth anniversary approaches, I am asking for your continued support through a tax-deductible donation. This year has been a difficult year financially for us due to cut- backs in Federal and state funding. Even so, we have had a busy and successful year. Among the 2008 highlights are:

    • Leadership Development Students participated in yearlong workshops and activities that included tutoring, life coaching, critical thinking, decision-making, etiquette, conflict resolution, presentation skills, resume building, and self-development.
    • Gathering for Justice Students participated in activities commemorating the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?s death. Through workshops and group discussions, participants learned about the non-violent strategies of the civil rights movement and how to apply these strategies to today?s issues.
    • Teen Health Expo Students assisted in planning and coordinating the First Annual Tri-State Teen Health Expo. The students addressed the issue of teen HIV/AIDS and created a greater understanding of the virus, among our youth. Over 500 youth attended the expo and over 120 youth/young adults were tested for the HIV virus.
    • College Prep 100% of high school senior college tour attendees were accepted to a college of their choice. Students attended financial aid and career planning workshops.

These and other programs at GapBuster depend on supporters like you. I hope we can count on you for a generous donation. To learn more about how our programs are helping to shape future leaders, please visit www.gapbuster.org or drop by our office located at 8216 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland.

On behalf of our youth, thank you for your loyalty and generosity.

Best wishes for a happy holiday season and prosperous New Year.

Sincerely,
